چکیده

Reproductive biotechnologies find application both in conservation of endangered species and to improve production from domestic animals. The cross between Mouflon and domestic sheep could be exploited to produce suckling lamb, a foodstuff with high organoleptic qualities and that could meet modern consumer demand. Mouflon semen was collected from two adult males using an artificial vagina during the sexual season. 80 ewes were synchronized by insertion of intravaginal sponges (40 mg FGA), and by an intramuscular injection of 400 IU of PMSG at sponge removal. 40 ewes (Group A) were inseminated into the cervix using refrigerated semen (+4°C, 0.25 ml and 800 million spermatozoa per dose) 56 hours after the sponge removal. 40 ewes (Group B) were inseminated into the uterus using the laparoscopic technique 54 hours after sponge removal using cryopreserved and later thawed semen (0.25 ml and 400 million spermatozoa). Chi-squared test showed values significantly higher (P<0.01) in fertility rate in Group A (47.5% vs 32.5%). In both groups prolificity rate was similar (1.1%). In conclusion, intracervical method with the use of fresh semen, gives better reproductive performances, and it is easy to apply for obtaining cross lamb on a large scale. On the other hand, result regarding laparoscopic-intrauterine technique could be considered good and the method is very useful because it allows to use semen in a rational way and in a longer lapse of time.

Effect of time and depth of insemination on fertility of Bharat Merino sheep inseminated trans-cervical with frozen-thawed semen

BACKGROUND Artificial insemination (AI) can serve as a powerful tool to the sheep owners for making rapid genetic progress of their flock. The AI in sheep is mostly performed using fresh semen with two reasons i) lambing rate following trans-cervical AI with frozen semen is limited by the inability of frozen-thawed sperm to transit the cervix and ii) the need of circumventing the cervical barri...

Management Factors Affecting Fertility in Sheep

An Arab horse breeder in the early 13th century carried out the first insemination reported, by trapping stallion semen in wool placed in the vagina of a mare and transferring this to the vagina of another mare (Heape, 1898). Later, in 1780, an Italian priest and physiologist named Lazzaro Spallanzani performed artificial insemination with dog semen, and revolutionised the way scientists though...

Faecal glucocorticoid metabolites and body temperature in Australian merino ewes (Ovis aries) during summer artificial insemination (AI) program

Reproductive wastage is a key issue for sheep producers, both regionally and globally. The reproductive output of farm animals can be influenced by physiological and environmental factors. Rapid and reliable quantification of physiological stress can provide a useful tool for designing and testing on-farm management interventions to improve farm animal welfare and productivity. In this study, w...

Intra-Uterine Insemination in the Dog Using the Scandinavian Trans-Cervical Catheter and a Comparison with other Methods

Introduction The interest for canine semen preservation and artificial insemination (AI) is steadily increasing worldwide, yet comparatively few studies are published each year within this field, and it is particularly difficult to find data from artificial inseminations using fresh semen, or semen preserved according to various methods for chilling, or freezing and thawing, and also comparing ...
